Lest We Forget

After attending the True Patriot Love dinner in Toronto last week in support of the families of our Military, it struck me how important it is for us to remember, and give thanks for the sacrifices made by our military. Growing up, Remembrance Day seemed to be more entrenched. Perhaps that is because we were in school and there were large assembly gatherings. Perhaps that is because of the fact that my generation would have grown up with great uncles and aunts that had fought in the Second World War. Or perhaps that parents had been part of the reserves in their youth. Another important thought is that Remembrance Day today is not only about those two World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam for which we give thanks and honour the sacrifice of the fallen or those left behind and the significance that they represent for us today. There are real day conflicts today where we continue to deploy our troops. Whether for peace keeping efforts, or in the midst of conflict, our men and women in the military fight for our freedoms. On November 11th in Canada we pause to give thanks and remembrance – the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. The poppy is a symbol of that remembrance. Thanks to those who have served over generations and for those who continue to serve today. @MolsonFerg

Lest we Forget…

As another November 11th draws to a close we can reflect in Canada as the nightly news recaps the ceremonies that honoured our fallen in war or military operations. Across Canada each province and community now have different approaches to what November 11th means. The meaning can be different for each individual but the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month is still a moment for us to remember those who fought and served so that we may enjoy the freedom that we experience today in Canada. I had the opportunity to attend last evening’s dinner in honour of Military Families - True Patriot Love. With over 178 tables sold, over $ 2 million was raised to support this wonderful foundation in support of the families of our military. As the sun creeps westward at the end of this Remembrance Day 2009 let us continue to be thankful of those who have fallen and for those Canadian Troops that are in the service around the globe in their various missions.
