Without great water we can’t make great beer

Andrew Molson, Chairman of the Board, Molson Coors Brewing Company and 7th Generation Molson Family at the 2nd Annual Canadian Water Summit

Molson Coors presented the second annual Canadian Water Summit on June 14th in Toronto. The summit, created by Innovolve Group, unites leaders, experts and stakeholders at a forum with a task to help prepare Canadians to overcome water-related challenges by facilitating solutions-oriented partnerships between business, government and civil society.

The Summit was a one day event that featured a presentation on water risk disclosure from keynote Chris Hedemenn of Carbon Disclosure Project as well as many other themes such as smarter water for smarter cities and Canadian Water leadership.

Andrew Molson, Chairman of the Board for Molson Coors Brewing Company (and 7th generation Molson family) joined us for the morning, speaking about Molson Coors’ Water Stewardship plans and our history with beer’s #1 ingredient.  It was fresh water that brought John Molson to the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal 225 years ago. Preserving fresh water and ensuring it as a sustainable resource is not only integral to our history, it is critical to our future.

Cheers to the Innovolve group, the presenters, panelists, volunteers and media. This summit allowed the opportunity for a range of stakeholders to join together and embrace the future of water in Canada.

“Without great water, we can’t make great beer” (Pete Coors)…one of my favourite quotes.  Cheers, Tonia

Molson Coors Global Water Summit 2011

Molson Coors Global Water Summit

Golden Brewery – the world’s largest single site brewery

The first (and maybe annual) Molson Coors Global Water Summit took place in April this year, where our corporate responsibility teams (communications, water resources, brewery operations and supply chain) from across all business units joined together in Golden, Colorado (home of Coors!) to learn, share best practices and develop our short and long term plans for Water Stewardship programs and efficiencies.

A packed three days with topics covering direct operations in our breweries, watershed risk management, collective action and community engagement with our employees and external stakeholders, reporting numbers and targets, and our upcoming Water Stewardship Month in September.

On the last day of the Summit, we were treated to a tour of the local watershed in Golden, Clear Creek Watershed – home of the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush and of course Coors’ water supply!  A 575 square mile watershed that provides water for agriculture, industry, energy and drinking; and is protected by many (including us) through the Clear Creek Water Foundation.

We were also lucky to have some guests join us.  A huge thanks to Pete Coors, Chairman of the Board, Molson Coors for dropping in to kick off the summit with some AWESOME stories of the Coors brewing heritage in Golden.  Pete gets the gold star for the best quote of the summit:  “When I hear it’s snowing in the Rockies I know that really means our brewing water is on its way.”  Thanks to Tod Christenson from BIER (Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable) for an overview of their Water focus plans and for facilitating some sessions for us.

Molson Coors Brewing Company has 350 years of combined brewing heritage in the US, Canada, and the U.K., and although a global brewer, beer is very much a locally brewed product that is tied to the quality of water we use to produce it. This summit truly opened the door for our teams from across the globe to come together and align on what we need to do together to ensure we develop and implement real-world solutions for water use and conversation in our breweries and local watersheds.  A great couple of days and looking forward to implementing the plans made here in Canada.

Up next?  Molson Coors is the presenting sponsor of the second annual Canadian Water Summit on June 14th in Toronto.  Keynote is Chris Hedemann of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water Disclosure, who will be sharing his insights on water measurement, management, risks and opportunities.  Hope to see you there!
