Molson in the Community

Greetings to you and yours on this early Sunday morning (ET) of what is known in three provinces in Canada as “Family Day Weekend”. Tomorrow is a day granted as a statuatory holiday to spend time with family, recharge batteries, take in the art gallery, museum, local fascination that you’ve never seen before. Since I’m in Detroit at a hockey tournament with my son’s Midget Junior team I note that it is also “President’s Day” tomorrow, being the third Monday of February and marking a holiday in the US. Like in Canada it is perhaps one of those days to just be home to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the day in what ever special way you might have in mind for you and the family. Some may travel, some may catch up, some may get their place straightened out in aniticipation of spring around the corner. Regardless it is a reminder for us (for me anyway) that all we do is really about family. So a toast to you and yours on this family day weekend in Ontario Canada. May you enjoy being with those around you or just connecting with those in your family that may be distant but just a phone call or click away. Greetings for 2013 from the Molson Coors Community Blog. @MolsonFerg here. based in Canada. I’ve been involved with this blog in one way shape or form from its start back in 2007. We tended to speak all things community in Canada and have enjoyed being engaged and involved with so many of our community partners and projects through the blog. It has also been a great platform for our employees to shout out or for us to shout out about the great work that our employees do in their communities. We migrated “location” of the blog to the Molson Coors central web site a year ago. Since then I must admit that the Canadian team has held back on some of our posts, given that they might have felt just a little to Canada centric. Given that our audience now is more global, we felt we needed to be more selective of what we posted, so as not to cause too much spam like content on the blog. We are now in the midst of talking amongst the team on how we are going to utilize the blog to continue to tell stories about community and Molson Coors efforts across our business around the world in areas of corporate responsibility and community engagement.We call this Our Beer Print. SO…we would love to hear from you on what you find interesting, appealing, informing or intriguing by way of this blog. Le samedi 15 décembre dernier, 15 employés du service de la Distribution participaient à la 72^e campagne de jouets des pompiers de la Ville de Sherbrooke. Les employés de Molson Coors de Sherbrooke participent à cette cause depuis plus de 40 ans. Grâce à cette campagne de jouets, plus de 700 enfants de 400 familles ont reçu un cadeau à Noël.

Félicitations à Daniel Tisdel pour avoir organisé l’activité de cette année ainsi qu’à Gervais Nolet, Jeff Voggen Reiter, Olivier-Paul St-Germain, Josée Lortie, Denis Desmarais, Yan Audet, Pierre Berthiaume, Bernard Turcotte et Ben Price pour leur participation à cette belle initiative!

On Saturday, December 15, 15 employees from the Distribution department participated in Sherbrooke city firemen’s 72^nd toy campaign. Molson Coors employees in Sherbrooke have been taking part in this cause for over 40 years. Thanks to this toy campaign, more than 700 children from 400 families have received a gift at Christmas.

Congratulations to Daniel Tisdel for having orgaized this year’s activity, and to Gervais Nolet, Jeff Voggen Reiter, Olivier-Paul St-Germain, Josée Lortie, Denis Desmarais, Yan Audet, Pierre Berthiaume, Bernard Turcotte and Ben Price for their participation in this great initiative!

…for many years along the path where we walk our dog behind Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, a small tree was decorated with festive bobbles and ornaments. Then suddenly one year there was a note near the tree advising that it would be the final year that the tree would be decorated. We could only imagine that the folks were moving on, or that a kindred senior soul was just finding it too difficult to navigate the woods and present this annual wonder to the community. A year passed and then my wife decided that we had to continue on this local tradition. So…our neighbours with us at dusk a couple of weeks back, decorated this small lonely tree along the path behind Sunnybrook. We hope that it will bring joy, reflection, smiles, hope and a sense of community to passers by. May this season bring much joy and a new year that is full of peace and harmony. Perhaps a lonely tree in the woods will help people think of how each of us can work to make this world a better place. Cheers to the Season. Le coup d’envoi des festivités du marché de Noël de Sherbrooke a été donné au début décembre que déjà des milliers de Sherbrookois ont eu la chance de patiner sur le tout nouveau sentier glacé réfrigéré.

L’obtention d’un don de 75 000 $ de Molson Coors a en effet pavé la voie à ce projet unique qui en sera à son premier hiver. D’une longueur de 154 mètres, le sentier glacé situé entre l’Hôtel Times et le lac des Nations s’ajoute aux nombreuses attractions de ce coin de la ville déjà fort intéressant, particulièrement durant le temps des Fêtes. L’aide de Molson Coors a en fait permis de payer le tapis réfrigéré qui sert de base au sentier.

Le projet en entier est évalué à 170 000 $ « Le tapis, c’est la surface sur laquelle nous arrosons pour pouvoir patiner par la suite. Son avantage, c’est qu’il se construit à l’aide de blocs, un peu du même type que les blocs LEGO. Cette façon de faire nous permet de construire n’importe quelle surface et d’assurer une belle surface glacée peu importe les caprices de Dame Nature », a expliqué Frédéric Farrugia, président de la Corporation du marché de Noël de Sherbrooke.

La patinoire réfrigérée est ainsi l’un des 21 projets retenus à travers le pays par Molson Coors, et a obtenu le montant maximal alloué par le programme avec 75 000 $, ce qui démontre bien la qualité du projet et le dynamisme de la communauté. « Par sa contribution de 75 000 $, Molson Coors est fière d’avoir été l’instigateur qui a su rallier différents partenaires, dont la ville de Sherbrooke, dans la réalisation de ce projet exceptionnel. Ensemble, levons notre verre au dynamisme et à la passion de la communauté Sherbrookoise » a souligné Olivier-Paul St-Germain, représentant chez Molson Coors, lors de l’inauguration de la patinoire.

Quatrième bateau à vapeur lancé par John Molson en 1817, le « Lady Sherbrooke » était à la fine pointe de la technologie alors que sa machine était la plus puissante et la plus performante de l’époque. Jusqu’au 31 mars, l’exposition « Enquête sur le Lady Sherbrooke, joyau de la flotte de John Molson » est présentée au Château Dufresne, situé au 2929, avenue Jeanne-d’Arc, à quelques pas du métro Pie-IX à Montréal.

La navigation à vapeur représentait une véritable révolution. Le « Lady Sherbrooke » assurait le transport de marchandises (dont la bière Molson!) et de personnes entre Québec et Montréal. Un périple de 16 heures sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, incluant les escales de ravitaillement. Plus de 800 personnes pouvaient prendre place à bord. Le navire était en service jusqu’en 1826 et il a disparu du paysage fluvial vers 1840.

L’épave a été retrouvée en 1963, aux îles de Boucherville. Cependant, c’est qu’en 1983 que les fouilles archéologiques débutent pour se terminer en 1993. Plus de 6000 heures de plongée ont été effectuées dans les eaux noires du fleuve. Différentes pièces du navire ont été retrouvées, notamment de la vaisselle et de petits objets. Les plongées ont permis de reproduire la coque et ses composantes. Une maquette peut également être vue par les visiteurs de l’exposition.

Bref, une partie de l’histoire de Molson Coors et du Québec… Bonne visite !
