Great news for us from Vancouver this week. Yes indeed a few days ago (May 26) I had the opportunity to attend an awards dinner in Vancouver, where BC Hydro gave Molson their top award in the Power Smart program — the Power Smart Leader designation for 2009.

I felt very proud that our company was honoured with this huge award which speaks directly of Vancouver brewery achievements in saving energy, and driving environmental sustainability. It’s great to see this recognition being given to a lot of dedicated people who were diligently striving to make improvements over a number of years.

BC Hydro created the Power Smart program to provide programs and incentives to encourage customers to use less power, and Molson first got on board with the program in 2000. Starting with fairly low ratings, every year our team at the Vancouver brewery worked very hard to achieve significantly greater and greater energy savings. We continued to improve our Power Smart rating until in 2009 we won the Power Smart Leader award, as mentioned. It goes to show what persistence and commitment can do.

During the past 11 years since BC Hydro began Power Smart program, I think it’s interesting that so far only two public companies have received the Power Smart Leader award: Toyota and now Molson. By winning this award, Molson stands out as a company that cares, and shows others how it can be done–changing our thinking, operations and equipment in order to conserve energy. Not only is it good for the planet, it’s good for our business.

All the individual efforts of the employees in Vancouver are a big reason for this amazing success. Congratulations on making a difference!

Millions of listeners will be tuning in to an important message that is being promoted by our Molson Toronto Brewery workers through the peak selling periods in 2009. Thanks to Canadian Network Broadcasting, the Canadian Union of Brewery and General Workers – Local 325 are playing their part in spreading the word about making Responsible Choices. The intent of this year’s campaign is to focus on reducing impaired driving. Thanks to this special partnership key messages started running leading up to and during the May Long weekend, Canada Day, August Civic Long Weekend, Labour Day, Thanksgiving and the Christmas Holiday Season. Hats off to the folks at CNB Media as well as Glen Hamilton and his membership at the Toronto Brewery for this tremendous initiative. Here’s To Responsible Choices, all year long. @MolsonFerg

BEST. DAY. EVER. last week when we got a letter from Ryan Seguin, TUAV Ops in Kandahar.  Ryan is one of the members of the TUAV Hockey Team in Afganistran that Molson has been supporting over the last year (see pics and read more about the team), and we were thrilled last Thursday to receive two parcels in the mail from him.  Just had to post a blog about it – was blown away by what he sent! Check it out.

Ryan sent us a propeller that was on the UAV that had flown over Afghanistan during a mission in March.  All the hockey team members signed the propeller. Everyone wrote a little note too, which was the best part!

They also sent us some Pashmina’s from the local area.  The ladies in the office loooooooved these!

Les bénévoles de Molson sur le site de la Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon

Les vendredi 23 et samedi 23 mai dernier, Dave Gagnon aidé d’une quarantaine d’employés de Molson, membres de familles et amis, ont participé au nettoyage du site de la Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon, un camp dirigé par la Société pour les enfants handicapés du Québec pour les jeunes ayant un trouble envahissant du développement.

Cette participation s’inscrivait dans le cadre de la formation continue de Molson visant à préparer les employés à de futurs rôles de direction, où l’implication communautaire joue un rôle prioritaire en terme de valeurs d’entreprise.

Par l’entremise du Programme de bénévolat Molson, ces employés ont profité du programme qui offre à tout le personnel intéressé une journée hors-travail payée pour participer à une initiative de bénévolat collective réunissant une dizaine d’employés de Molson ou plus.

Dans le cadre de cette activité de bénévolat, Molson a remis aussi un don de 2 500 $ provenant de son Fonds de bienfaisance Molson. La réalisation d’un magnifique projet de tous ces employés(es) … FÉLICITATIONS!

Étant partenaire de la Fondation Sport-Études (http://www.alliancesportetudes.ca/fondation.html)  depuis de nombreuses années, Molson s’associe davantage à la cause des étudiants-athlètes du Québec en octroyant deux nouvelles bourses MOLSON pour les étudiants-athlètes de niveau universitaire du montant de 2 500$ chacune. Ces bourses sont destinées à appuyer les étudiants-athlètes ayant fait la transition des études collégiales vers les études universitaires, tout en poursuivant leur rêve sportif.

Deux étudiants-étudiants se sont ainsi mérité une bourse Molson de 2,500$ :

Université de Sherbrooke

Marie-Claude Surprenant, athlète en vélo de montagne et est étudiante en médecine à l’université de Sherbrooke. Elle amorce sa 3e saison dans la catégorie U23 et est la vice-championne canadienne dans sa catégorie. Ses objectifs sportifs seraient de réussir à se classer parmi les 30 premières aux tranches de la Coupe du monde cette année. En plus du circuit international, elle participera au Championnat cyclistes nationaux à Saint-Félicien en juillet prochain ainsi qu’au Jeux du Canada en août 2009 qui se tiendront à l’Île du Prince-Édouard.  Membre de l’équipe du Québec, Marie-Claude est un modèle pour les autres athlètes qui concilient sport de haut niveau et études supérieures. Elle souhaite continuer à bien conjuguer ses études et son sport afin de terminer son baccalauréat en médecine en 4 ans. Université du Québec à Montréal

Pierre-Luc Laliberté, athlète en canoë de vitesse et étudiant au Baccalauréat en actuariat à l’Université du Québec à Montréal. La saison dernière, Pierre-Luc a remporté une médaille d’argent chez les U23 en C-4 à la Régate internationale de Ruhr qui se tenaient à Bochum en Allemagne. Chez les Séniors, il a été membre de l’équipe C-4 qui s’est classée 4e lors de la Régate de la Coupe du Monde qui se tenait à Poznan en Pologne ainsi que du Championnats Panaméricains. Il souhaite se qualifier lors des essais de l’équipe nationale qui participera aux Championnats Panaméricains qui se tiendront à Rio de Janeiro cet été ainsi que pour la tournée européenne et pour le Championnat du monde qui se tiendra à Halifax. En plus de ses excellents résultats sportifs, Pierre-Luc se démarque également sur le plan scolaire. À sa 2e session universitaire en actuariat, il a maintenu une moyenne de 4,23 sur 4.3.
