Molson Official Beer Supplier to Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games

I had an opportunity to chat with our President and CEO, Kevin Boyce, just prior to the holidays. We asked if he would like to write a blog post related to our official supplier status for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games. He worked with Tonia and I on creating this message and we are delighted to post it on his behalf. Kevin looks forward to reviewing your responses and Tonia will make sure that we get back to you in a timely manner…over to Kevin…

I am delighted to post this blog today formally announcing that Molson will be the official beer supplier to Canada’s Games in Vancouver in 2010.  Molson is proud to play our part in celebrating with Canadians leading up to and including the games.  It is a proud moment for all of our employees, customers and suppliers to be hosting this world event in British Columbia and with Canadians from coast to coast to coast. No doubt you will see that pride showing through in the videos accompanying this post.

Molson will be supporting a number of initiatives leading up to the games through various employee and brand activities.  Please join with us in supporting the games and Team Canada as we count down to February 12, 2010 in Vancouver.  We look forward to playing our part to make this a truly memorable event for all Canadians.

Our social media team will be highlighting a number of our activities right here on our Molson Community Blog in the weeks and months to follow (Thanks to Tonia for inserting the links for me in this post!).

Cheers,

Kevin Boyce

Salutations,

Kevin Boyce

Looking back at 2008

“Tis the season” for those year-end review stories, so we thought it would be fitting to try to capture some of the great work Molson and its employees have done in the past 12 months to help benefit community organizations in towns and cities all across Canada.  With the holidays about to end, there’s still time for all Canadians to make a contribution in 2008 to their own communities. That being said, to help play our part, I’ve listed some details about the great organizations and individuals that we’ve been privileged enough to work with in the past year.  We hope you’ll consider sharing a little of yourself this holiday with those less fortunate.

Some of the organizations and initiatives that stand out for me in 2008:

Toque-Tuesday

Raising the Roof is an organization that builds partnerships across the nation to help solve youth homlessness. Molson has supported their Youthworks program for three years, but also has a very special story with them. On February 5th, 2008, over 1,100 Molson employees sold toques on Toque Tuesday (RTR’s national fundraiser), raising just over $90,000 in about one hour.  This event was also the day we launched this blog! To donate

mealexchange

I’ve written about Meal Exchange a few times on this blog and one of their employees wrote a great guest blog. Meal Exchange is a national student-founded, youth-driven, charity organized to address local hunger by mobilizing the talent and passion of students.  To donate

United Way

United Way….wow – this a great one. Every year Molson has an internal United Way campaign, and this year was out best ever!  We raised $610,000 this year (increase of 15% from 2007). Amazing effort from our employees across Canada. To donate

Framework Foundation/Timeraiser

Framework Foundation promotes volunteerism amongst Canadians in their 20s to 30s by helping volunteer agencies find the skilled people their organization needs – Molson is a founding sponsor of Timeraiser, an event that is part volunteer fair, part silent art auction and part night on the town that connects volunteers with volunteer agencies.  I took part in the Toronto Timeraiser for the first time this year and it was one of the best events I went to in 2008.

A national literacy organization that Molson has worked with for years.  We were given the Frontier College Fitzpatrick award this year. To donate

Again, these are just a few of the MANY organizations that Molson was involved with across Canada in 2008 – the above are initiatives that I was lucky to directly be a part of.

In 2008 Molson reached out to just over 200 organizations. Here are links to some of them organizations (by region), and to view all the Molson in the Community photos from 2008 — click here.

John Molson’s Birthday

Brew 2.0 Vancouver, originally uploaded by Molson Blog.

A toast to the founder of Molson, John Molson, who was born this day (December 28th) in 1763. This photo is fitting given that the image of John Molson is overlooking some members of the Molson team, joined by frends from H&K following our Brew 2.0 at the Vancouver Brewery earlier this year. Also of note is that the person in the middle at the front is Geoff Molson, VP Marketing Quebec region and the seventh generation member of John Molson’s family. Today we raise a glass to our founder John Molson and thank him for his legacy of quality beer and our continuing involvement in the greater community in which we live work and play. Cheers !

Update — Hockey Jerseys for the Troops

In Adam’s blog yesterday, he mentioned that we created some custom Molson Canadian jerseys for the Kandahar Hockey League (KLH) in Afghanistan.

Well, the jerseys arrived at Molson in Toronto this morning and we’ll be shipping them out later today….but first, we thought we’d model them for all to see!  (Thanks to my fabulous Molson models Paul and Barb).

We’ve asked the team to send a group photo once they’ve received the jerseys so I can post it here too. Cheers and good luck in the playoffs!

Cheers to Our Troops This Holiday!

Cheers to our Troops

Supporting our Troops has been a longstanding tradition at Molson dating back to the late 18th century, when John Molson himself would brew beer for soldiers stationed near Montreal. Today, it’s our great pleasure and honour to continue that tradition by sharing a little piece of home with those brave men and women deployed all over the world representing our country so well.

So once again this year we’ve sent over 10,000 cans of Molson Canadian to soldiers stationed all over the world, from Afghanistan to Southwest Asia. The beer is designated for special occasions set to take place on Canadian Bases such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when off-duty soldiers can partake in the season’s festivities. In addition to our beer donation, we’re also donating 3,000 custom-designed baseball caps – one for every single deployed troop. The caps will be included in holiday care packages sent by the Department of National Defense’s Operation Santa Claus program.

One final story to share with you that makes us all proud is about a call we received through our consumer hotline back in November from Kandahar. Ryan Seguin from the TUAV (Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) flight group in Afghanistan told us about his team that plays in the KHL – Kandahar Hockey League – who play twice a week when they are not operationally committed. Ryan tells us that playing in the KHL is an excellent opportunity to give their minds a rest and gives them a taste of home. Ryan was looking for a sponsor for the team’s jerseys and obviously we jumped at the chance to support Ryan and his teammates. We’ve since created a custom jersey for their team, which we hope will arrive on the ground soon, just in time for the playoffs. Good luck boys!

So, from all of us here at Molson – happy holidays to all of our Canadian Armed Forces and their families. Please know that wherever you’re spending the holidays this year we are thinking of you and raising a toast to your brave service.

We encourage anyone else looking to make a donation to our Canadian Troops to visit the following sites to find out more about how you can help.
